Name of Club – Southend United
Year founded – 1906
Ground Name – Roots Hall

Southend United played their first ever football match at Roots Hall in September 1906 and they became founder members of the third division in the 1920 – 1921 season. Their finest season during the early years was the 1931 – 1932 campaign, finishing the season off in third place of the Southern third division. They achieved another third place finish in 1950. Southend continued to hover around the third and fourth division during the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s, gaining promotion in to the third division at the end of the 1977 – 1978 season. They failed to get any form of grip in the third tier of English football and were relegated back in to the fourth division in 1985. The early 1990’s saw Southend make a decent improvement in their league fortunes, reaching the second tier of English football, they introduced Stan Collymore to the football world in 1993 and was prolific in front of goal before signing for Nottingham Forest. They soon found themselves back in the fourth division by the end of the 1990’s however they are now playing their football in the championship and are just one division separated from the premiership.
